When the U.S. entered World War I, 135 Mt. Lebanon men enlisted. Upon leaving for service, each young man was presented with a money belt made by the local Red Cross unit, which operated out of the Ammann Avenue School. Eleven of these young men were wounded, and one, George Hackney, did not return. A plaque dedicated to these men was installed outside Mt.
