Serving as the Living Legacy of our Local Life TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE AREA

The Glenwood Springs Historical Society, Inc.

The Glenwood Springs Historical Society, Inc. is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, and showcasing the history of Glenwood Springs and Garfield County, Colorado. Established in 1963, initially as the Frontier Historical Society, it was officially incorporated in April 1964[2]. In 2016, the name was officially changed to the Glenwood Springs Historical Society[2].

Mission and Activities

The society's mission is to collect and preserve historical artifacts and materials, making them available for research and interpretation through various exhibitions, publications, and educational programs[2]. It collaborates with other organizations and individuals to achieve these goals. The society operates two museum locations: the main Frontier Museum and a satellite collection dedicated to Doc Holliday[4][5].

The Frontier Museum is located in a charming, furnished 1905 Victorian-style house and features exhibits on local mining, ranching, and the Ute Native American tribe[3]. The museum also houses a collection of historical photographs and offers educational programs, walking tours, and annual events such as the popular Ghost Walk in Linwood Cemetery[3][4]. This event brings to life the stories of early settlers, portrayed by actors, during October weekends[3]. Additionally, the society supports projects like historic site restoration and archive digitization[5].

Historical Significance of Glenwood Springs

Glenwood Springs has a rich history dating back to the prehistoric era, with its hot springs being a sacred site for the indigenous Ute tribe. The area became a tourist destination early on, attracting notable figures such as President Theodore Roosevelt, the Unsinkable Molly Brown, Buffalo Bill Cody, and Doc Holliday, who spent his final days in Glenwood Springs[2][4]. Doc Holliday, a well-known figure in Wild West lore, is buried in Linwood Cemetery, which visitors can explore during walking tours or the annual Ghost Walk[3][5].

Role in Community Engagement

The Glenwood Springs Historical Society plays a vital role in community engagement through educational outreach programs for school children and by providing research assistance to community members[4]. The society relies on volunteers and donations to continue its efforts in preserving and celebrating the area's unique history[5].
