Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum
Introduction
Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum is a nonprofit organization located in Cincinnati, Ohio, and is recognized as a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Established in 1844, it is the third largest cemetery in the United States, spanning over 733 acres.
History
The creation of Spring Grove Cemetery was motivated by the need for a proper burial place during the cholera epidemic of the 1830s and 1840s, which left the small church cemeteries in Cincinnati overcrowded and neglected. Members of the Cincinnati Horticultural Society formed a cemetery association in 1844 to design a rural cemetery inspired by renowned European and East Coast American cemeteries, such as Père Lachaise in Paris and Mount Auburn in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
On December 1, 1844, Salmon P. Chase prepared the Articles of Incorporation, and the cemetery was formally chartered on January 21, 1845. The first burial took place on September 1, 1845. In 1855, Adolph Strauch, a celebrated landscape architect, was hired to enhance the grounds, incorporating a "lawn plan" that emphasized open spaces and limited private enclosures, earning international acclaim.
Architecture and Design
Spring Grove features a diverse collection of Gothic Revival architecture, including notable mausoleums and monuments. The cemetery is renowned for its beautifully landscaped grounds, consisting of lakes, footbridges, and woodland areas. The design concept introduced by Strauch, which emphasized harmony with nature, was revolutionary for its time and later became a model for many other cemeteries.
Arboretum
In 1987, Spring Grove officially became "Spring Grove Cemetery & Arboretum" to highlight its impressive botanical collection. The arboretum includes over 500 species of woody plants and 1,000 varieties of trees, shrubs, annuals, and perennials. It serves as a premier site for horticultural study and appreciation, offering educational opportunities and community engagement.
Notable Features
- National Champion Trees: Spring Grove boasts several state and national champion trees, showcasing its dedication to arboreal conservation.
- Historical Significance: The cemetery is the final resting place for many notable figures, including Civil War Generals and Congressional Medal of Honor recipients.
- Cultural Events: Spring Grove offers guided tours focusing on art, history, architecture, and horticulture, providing a unique cultural experience for visitors.
Mission and Services
Spring Grove remains committed to providing a serene and educational environment for its community. It offers various burial options and memorialization styles, ensuring that its services are accessible to people of all income levels. The organization continues to serve as a vibrant part of Cincinnati's cultural landscape, fostering a connection between nature, history, and the community.
Designations
Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark on March 29, 2007. It is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The cemetery chapel is recognized separately on the National Register of Historic Places.

Spring Grove Cemetery is the final resting place of 41 Civil War generals—just one example of its deep connection to our nation’s history. As the war raged, Spring Grove became a place of honor for both Union and Confederate soldiers, with nearly 1,000 laid to rest in three concentric burial sites. Each mound is centered by an officer’s grave, symbolically commanding their fallen troops.
