First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association
The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, now known as FCSLA Life, is a fraternal benefit society founded in Cleveland, Ohio, on January 1, 1892, by nine Slovak immigrant women led by Anna Hurban. It aims to provide financial security to its members while embracing Catholic values and Slovak traditions.
Founding and Early Years
The association was established to provide death and injury benefits, recognizing the risks faced by families due to industrial labor. Encouraged by Father Stephen Furdek, the women developed bylaws and chose St. Ann as their patroness. By the end of 1892, the organization had grown significantly, bolstering its assets and membership.
Growth and Development
By 1899, the society had over 1,800 members and more than 80 branches. It filed for a charter in 1899, allowing it to operate under Ohio's fraternal code. In the 1930s, it helped families through the Great Depression by granting waivers and later became known for strong leadership, with notable figures like President Frances Jakabcin. The Cleveland Slovak Union merged with FCSLA in 1945, expanding its reach. Over the decades, FCSLA has expanded its programs to include scholarships and community activities.
Modern Era
In recent years, FCSLA has rebranded as FCSLA Life, reflecting its modernized approach to providing life insurance and other financial services while maintaining its core values. Under the leadership of Cynthia M. Maleski, who served as National President and CEO from 2012 until her retirement in 2025, FCSLA Life experienced significant financial growth and strengthened its community outreach.
Mission and Impact
FCSLA Life is dedicated to providing financial security while fostering community engagement. It supports various charitable initiatives and educational programs, including the Anna Hurban Scholarship. The organization continues to uphold its founding values of Family, Faith, and Financial Security.
Legacy and Recognition
FCSLA Life celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017, marking over a century of service to its members and the community. It is recognized for its financial strength, with an A.M. Best rating of A- (Excellent) as of 2021 and a presence across the United States.
