Sunday Scoop: What’s Rustling in the Riverbank? In our Great Big River exhibit, the Mississippi River springs to life through a series of hands-on experiences, and one of the most surprising is our Riverbank Exploration. Here, kids become nature detectives, stepping into a patch of tall reeds to search for hidden critters. As they make their way through the swaying grasses, they’re not just observing nature—they’re part of it! Each step brings the chance to spot a frog, salamander, cricket, or other creature tucked among the stems. Adding to the adventure is a beautifully illustrated backdrop that sets the scene with otters, eagles, beavers, and other animals that live right here along the Mississippi near St. Cloud. These images aren’t just decorative, they’re educational too. Each one is labeled in both English and Dakota, inviting visitors to learn the Dakota names and deepen their connection to the land and its history. Through simple, playful discovery, children build vocabulary, spark curiosity, and come to see the river not just as a body of water—but as a vibrant, shared home for people, animals, and plants alike. We’re honored to receive a Heritage Preservation Award from the City of St. Cloud! At Monday night’s city council meeting, our board and team were recognized for transforming three historic downtown buildings into the future home of Great River Children’s Museum. These buildings have lived many lives, from a chicken hatchery in the 1930s to Liberty Savings and Loan, Eddie’s Market (a self-serve grocery store), a car dealership, offices, and even an athletic club. We’re proud to carry forward this legacy of preserving the spirit of Downtown St. Cloud while creating something new for the next generation.
