Council of Black Administrators

TO PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDENTS

Council of Black Administrators

The Council of Black Administrators (COBA) is a nonprofit organization that operates within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Established in the late 1960s, COBA aims to enhance educational opportunities and promote equity for Black students and educators within the district.

History

COBA originated in response to the challenges faced by Black administrators in the educational system. Initially, informal meetings among a small group of Black administrators began in 1961, evolving into a formally organized group by 1968. The organization was created to address feelings of isolation among Black educators, foster professional growth, and ensure representation in decision-making processes pertaining to education.

Mission and Objectives

The mission of COBA is to advocate for the educational needs of the Black community within the LAUSD and to support the professional development of its members. The organization has several key objectives:

  • Advocacy: To communicate the educational needs of the Black community to policymakers and decision-makers within the school district.

  • Integration: To work towards the development of an integrated educational system that maximizes the potential of all students.

  • Support for Educators: To identify, encourage, and prepare capable Black educators for leadership positions within the educational system.

  • Resource Development: To serve as a resource for increasing the effectiveness of school personnel working with Black children.

Programs and Initiatives

COBA actively engages in various programs aimed at supporting Black students and educators. Notably, the organization offers scholarship opportunities for Black students planning to attend four-year colleges or universities. These scholarships are designed not only to provide financial assistance but also to recognize academic excellence, leadership, and community involvement.

Membership

Membership in COBA is open to Black administrators and educators within the LAUSD. The organization emphasizes collaboration among its members to promote educational excellence and equity within the community. COBA members play significant roles in leadership and advocacy, contributing to the improvement of educational outcomes for all students.

Conclusion

The Council of Black Administrators remains committed to its mission of enhancing educational opportunities for Black students and supporting Black educators in their professional journeys. Through advocacy, scholarship programs, and community engagement, COBA continues to impact positively on the educational landscape within the Los Angeles Unified School District.
