Earth Through A Lens
Earth Through a Lens was formed to promote publiceducation concerning the development of a sustainable environment. Rather thanproducing intellectually-based reading material or developing a speaker’sbureau, the project was focused instead by the concept that attitude formationand change entails an emotional as well as an intellectual component. It alsoaccepts the maxim that a picture is worth a thousand words. Therefore Earth Through a Lens seeks to fulfill itsmission of promoting a more sustainable environment by holding a nationalphotographic competition focused both upon the natural environment and on humanimpact on the environment. By selecting the strongest photographic images fromboth categories, we seek to engage the public in understanding how humanbehavior impacts the environment both with respect to degradation andrestoration. The public display of EarthThrough a Lens is programmed to occur in April and includes a public receptionheld on Earth Day, April 22. Theorganization’s goals are achieved first, by encouraging photographers todocument environmental change, second, by exposing the general public to theseimages and a CD-based catalog, and, finally, by organizing a parallel K-12school-based program designed to focus children toward photographing bothbeautiful and degraded aspects of their environment.
