Waitsburg Historical Society

The Waitsburg Historical Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the history and memorabilia of the Touchet River Valley, particularly in the area between Dayton and Waitsburg, Washington. Founded to restore the old Weller Library (once the finest home in Waitsburg), the society has expanded its mission to include the preservation and sharing of local history.

History

The society was formed in 1971 by a group of citizens who aimed to restore the Weller Library, which had been vacant for nearly 25 years. This historic building, once known as the "old haunted house," was transformed into a hub for preserving local history. The restoration process involved local organizations, businesses, and individuals working together.

Mission and Activities

The Waitsburg Historical Society focuses on preserving the history of Waitsburg and the Touchet River Valley. It operates the Bruce Mansion Museum Complex, which includes several historic properties:

• Bruce Mansion: A restored Victorian home showcasing life in the 19th century.
• Carriage House: Featuring horse-drawn transportation.
• School House: Providing insights into early education.
• Wait's Mill House: Housing a replica of Waitsburg's 1865 Flour Mill.
• Wilson-Phillips House: Displaying special collections of local interest.

The society relies on donations and volunteer work to maintain its properties and programs. It offers museum tours led by knowledgeable docents and hosts educational events for elementary school classes. Community events like the annual Pioneer Fall Festival are also organized by the society.

Governance and Funding

The Waitsburg Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, meaning all contributions are tax-deductible. The organization is staffed entirely by volunteers, who handle tasks ranging from leading tours to maintaining properties and managing fundraising efforts. Membership and donations provide critical support for exhibits, conservation projects, and education programs. The society avoids using government funds for restoration projects.
