First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of the USA

The First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association of the USA, now commonly known as FCSLA Life, is a fraternal benefit society founded in 1892 in Cleveland, Ohio. It was established by Anna Hurban and eight other Slovak immigrant women, with the encouragement of Father Stephan Furdek, to provide financial security and support to families affected by industrial labor risks.

History

In its early years, the organization grew rapidly. By the end of 1892, it had expanded from 9 members with $77 in assets to 95 members with $212 in assets. By 1899, it had 1,859 members and 83 branches, with a legal charter established that year to operate under Ohio's fraternal code.

Throughout its history, FCSLA has contributed to the Slovak-American community by preserving Slovak heritage and culture. In the 1930s, during the Great Depression, the society granted financial waivers to destitute families. In 1942, it celebrated 50 years of service with $12 million in assets and 65,000 members. The Cleveland Slovak Union merged with FCSLU in 1945.

In the 1950s, FCSLA introduced a scholarship program and began planning for a new home office and a home for the aged. The organization's name was changed to the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association in the late 1960s to avoid confusion with labor unions.

Recent Developments

In 2017, FCSLA celebrated its 125th anniversary, marking significant growth and reaching over $900 million in assets with 115,000 members across 48 states and the District of Columbia.

Under the leadership of Cynthia M. Maleski, who served as National President and CEO from 2012 until her retirement in 2025, FCSLA experienced substantial financial growth, with insurance in force and assets exceeding $1 billion. During her tenure, the organization expanded its branch network and initiated several charitable initiatives.
