Overview

People Helping People Inc. (PHP) is a nonprofit organization based in Baraboo, Wisconsin, established to assist individuals and families in need through various support programs. Founded in 2012 by Rev. Bill Harris, the organization operates under the laws of Wisconsin and has been recognized as a tax-exempt entity under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Mission

The mission of People Helping People is to empower individuals by helping them find pathways out of hardship and enabling them to re-invent or structure their lives. This is accomplished through a blend of job training, community support, and essential services aimed at fostering self-sufficiency and resilience among underserved populations.

History

The idea for People Helping People was conceived in late 2012 when founder Bill Harris witnessed a group of homeless men leaving a warming center with no prospects for the future. This experience inspired him to launch a program focused on providing job training, which officially began in 2016 with a curriculum supported by the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. The organization also successfully acquired and renovated a headquarters building in downtown Baraboo in 2015, enhancing its capacity to serve the community.

Programs and Services

People Helping People runs five main programs designed to address various community needs:

• Job Training Programs: Offering personal mentoring and free career training to unemployed adults, PHP aims to facilitate their entry or re-entry into the workforce. Plans for expansion include the establishment of a Transitional Center for additional job training opportunities.

• School Supplies and Clothing: In collaboration with local elementary schools, PHP distributes school supplies, clothing, and other necessities to students and families in need.

• Holiday Food Assistance: The organization provides holiday meals, including turkeys or hams, to low-income families, ensuring they can celebrate Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas together.

• Crisis Food Assistance: PHP maintains connections with food pantries across multiple counties to supply food to families experiencing crises throughout the year.

• Veterans Support: Special programs are dedicated to supporting veterans and their families, recognizing their unique contributions to society.

Community Impact

PHP is committed to maintaining a low overhead for maximum community benefit. The organization is involved in various fundraising events throughout the year, primarily through brat fries and community sponsorships, to support its mission-driven programs. Over the years, PHP has received numerous awards and recognition for its impact, including being named the Nonprofit Organization of the Year by the Baraboo Area Chamber of Commerce in 2015.
