Knights of Columbus
The Knights of Columbus (K of C) is a global Catholic fraternal service order founded by Blessed Michael J. McGivney on March 29, 1882. It was originally established to serve as a mutual benefit society for working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States.
History
McGivney, a parish priest at St. Mary's Church in New Haven, Connecticut, recognized the need for a fraternal organization that would provide financial support and solidarity among Catholics. He initially proposed the name "Sons of Columbus," but the first members chose "Knights of Columbus," a name that encapsulated the organization's ritualistic nature and drew from positive historical associations with Christopher Columbus, the patron of the Order.
In its early years, the Knights of Columbus aimed to counter anti-Catholic and racial prejudices while fostering pride in both Catholic and American heritages. It expanded rapidly across the United States and internationally by 1905. Throughout the 20th century, the organization supported soldiers in various wars and advocated for Catholic social causes.
Organization and Principles
The Knights of Columbus is guided by four core principles: charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism. Membership is limited to practicing Catholic men aged 18 and older, with women participating through auxiliary groups like the Columbiettes. The Order includes more than 17,000 local councils worldwide, including those on college campuses.
Activities and Impact
The organization is renowned for its extensive charity work, including disaster relief, support for persons with disabilities, and pro-life advocacy. They also engage in significant financial services, operating one of the largest and most highly rated insurance programs for its members, totaling over $121 billion in life insurance in force as of 2023.
The Knights of Columbus actively support Catholic education and provide funds for various religious vocations and peace initiatives. They have been involved in several political advocacy campaigns, promoting Catholic views on family and life issues.
Financial Status
As a multi-billion dollar non-profit organization, the Knights of Columbus operates through more than 1,500 agents who are themselves members. The organization's financial strength is underscored by its A.M. Best A++ rating for over 40 consecutive years.
