Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas, commonly known as the Grand Lodge of Texas, is a fraternal organization and a governing body of Freemasonry in the state of Texas. It holds the distinction of being the largest of several governing bodies of Freemasonry within Texas.

History

The history of Freemasonry in Texas began in early 19th century. In 1828, Stephen F. Austin convened a meeting of Masons in San Felipe de Austin to petition the York Grand Lodge of Mexico for a charter. However, this effort was met with resistance due to the Mexican government's concerns about liberal influences in Texas. The government eventually outlawed Freemasonry in Mexico later that year.

In March 1835, five Master Masons—Anson Jones, John Wharton, Asa Brigham, James Phelps, and Alexander Russell—met in Brazoria to initiate the formation of the first Masonic Lodge in Texas. They applied to the Grand Lodge of Louisiana for a dispensation to form and operate a lodge. This dispensation led to the establishment of Holland Lodge No. 36 (later renamed Holland Lodge No. 1), with Anson Jones as its first Worshipful Master[1][2].

Freemasons and the Texas Revolution

During the Texas Revolution, Freemasons played significant roles. Prominent Masons like James Bonham, James Bowie, David Crockett, Almaron Dickenson, and William Barrett Travis were among the defenders of the Alamo. The Masonic network also facilitated planning and support for the revolution. Anson Jones, a key figure in Masonic circles, would later serve as the President of the Republic of Texas[1].

Establishment of the Grand Lodge

Following the formation of Holland Lodge No. 36, two more lodges, Milam Lodge No. 40 and McFarland Lodge No. 41, were established in 1837 through charters from the Grand Lodge of Louisiana. These three lodges sent representatives to Houston, where they established the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas. Anson Jones was elected its first Grand Master. Following Texas's admission to the United States, this body became the Grand Lodge of Texas[2][3].

Activities and Mission

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas focus on charitable work within local communities. They support initiatives such as educational programs, scholarships, and healthcare services for children through organizations like the Scottish Rite and Shrine. The fraternity aims to improve its members by fostering personal development and community service[2][4].

Membership and Structure

Membership in Freemasonry is restricted to men, with a focus on personal growth and moral development. The fraternity requires its members to believe in a Supreme Being and an afterlife, but does not impose specific theological interpretations. Aspirants progress through three degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason[3].

Conclusion

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas continue to be an influential fraternal organization in the state, emphasizing community service and personal improvement. With a rich history tied to the formation and development of Texas itself, the Grand Lodge remains a significant cultural and historical institution.
