Chinese Language School of South Jersey

The Chinese Language School of South Jersey (CLSJ), also known as the Chinese School of South Jersey (CSSJ), is a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching and preserving Chinese language and culture in South Jersey. Established in 1969, it operates as a 501(c)(3) public charity.

Mission and Programs

The school offers a range of language and cultural programs designed for individuals of all ages. It provides Mandarin classes for both children and adults, catering to different proficiency levels and backgrounds. For children, there are classes tailored for those whose parents are native Chinese speakers as well as those learning Chinese as a second language. These programs typically occur on Sundays and include various educational levels from kindergarten to high school.

The curriculum includes traditional Chinese characters and incorporates phonetic systems such as zhuyin and pinyin. Additionally, the school offers classes for preschoolers in a play-based environment, designed to introduce Mandarin through interactive activities.

For adults, the school provides Chinese language classes using the Chinese Link text, which supports beginners and advanced learners alike. These classes are designed to foster a community of learners interested in Chinese language and culture.

Community Engagement

Beyond its educational programs, CLSJ engages in community events and initiatives. The school has participated in activities such as fall hayrides and other cultural celebrations, which help foster a sense of community among its students and their families.

CLSJ also participates in fundraising initiatives, such as the affiliate program with a major online retailer, where a portion of the proceeds from purchases made through their link supports the school. Furthermore, it is part of TD Bank's Affinity Membership Program, which helps raise funds for the school at no cost to its supporters.

History and Impact

With over five decades of service to the community, CLSJ has established itself as a prominent cultural and educational institution in South Jersey. Its mission to preserve Chinese language and culture reflects its commitment to promoting cultural diversity and understanding in the region.

Organizational Status

As a public charity, CLSJ is registered with the IRS under the Employer Identification Number (EIN) 223330550. It does not disburse grants to other organizations but focuses on providing educational services and cultural enrichment programs to its community.

In 2024, it reported no grants distributed, reflecting its focus on operating expenses and community programs rather than grant-making activities.
