Sigma Alpha Sorority

Sigma Alpha Sorority is a U.S. nonprofit organization focused on promoting scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship among women in agriculture. It was founded on January 26, 1978, at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, by five women seeking an alternative to traditional social Greek sororities.

Founding and Purpose

The founders aimed to create an organization that would support women pursuing careers in agriculture. Today, Sigma Alpha is a national organization with over 80 collegiate chapters and more than 20,000 initiated members across the United States. The sorority's mission is to cultivate professional women in agriculture.

Pillars and Emphasis

Sigma Alpha is built upon four pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Fellowship. It emphasizes the development of these qualities in its members to help them excel in the agricultural industry.

Symbols and Traditions

The sorority's motto is "Cultivating Professional Women in Agriculture." Its colors are emerald and maize, with the yellow chrysanthemum as its official flower. The emerald is its jewel, and the baby bull serves as its mascot.

Philanthropy

Sigma Alpha's national philanthropy is "Agriculture in the Community," which focuses on spreading awareness and appreciation for agriculture through educational efforts and community service.

Affiliations
