95th Bomb Group Memorials Foundation
The 95th Bomb Group Memorials Foundation is a nonprofit organization recognized as a 501(c)(3) by the IRS. Its mission is to educate the public about the history of the 95th Bomb Group (H), focusing on its role in the air campaign over Central Europe during World War II.
Purpose and Activities
The Foundation supports several activities to fulfill its purpose:
- Historical Preservation: It develops and maintains exhibits, honoring the emotional involvement of aircrews and related units.
- Memorial Preservation: The Foundation preserves memorials created by veterans of the 95th Bomb Group Association, its predecessor organization. These include memorials at the United States Air Force Academy, National Museum of the U.S. Air Force Memorial Garden, National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force, The Ring of Eight and B-17 Tail in Horham, UK, and Arlington National Cemetery.
- Community Engagement: The organization sends birthday, get-well, and condolence cards to veterans and widows, fostering a sense of community and connection among those connected to the 95th Bomb Group.
- Partnerships: The Foundation has developed a partnership with the newly activated 95th Wing at Offutt Air Force Base, promoting the legacy and history of the 95th Bomb Group.
Background
The idea of forming a dedicated organization for the 95th Bomb Group began during reunions of the Mighty Eighth Air Force Veterans Association in the 1970s. Veterans from the 95th Bomb Group decided to hold their own reunions, leading to the creation of the 95th Bomb Group Association in 1981. This association was instrumental in creating memorials for 95th veterans who were lost during the war. In 1995, the organization transitioned into its current form as the 95th Bomb Group Memorials Foundation, ensuring the legacy of the 95th Bomb Group would continue through future generations.
Impact and Legacy
The Foundation's efforts have been sustained by its members over the past decades, preserving the history and honoring the service of those who were part of the 95th Bomb Group. Through its activities, the Foundation ensures that the sacrifices and achievements of these veterans are remembered and appreciated by the public.
Relationship with the 95th Wing
The Foundation's mission is closely aligned with the newly activated 95th Wing at Offutt Air Force Base. By collaborating with the wing's commander, the Foundation incorporates the historical significance and values of the original 95th Bomb Group into the operations and culture of the new unit, thereby maintaining continuity with its predecessors.
