Established with the mission to inspire those affected by spinal cord injuries to overcome their challenges, the foundation promotes physical independence and provides emotional support and comprehensive rehabilitation resources.
History and Background
The foundation was founded by Natalie Marie Barnhard, a physical therapist assistant and licensed massage therapist, who herself sustained a spinal cord injury in 2004. Drawing from her personal experience with the difficulties of obtaining rehabilitation therapy, medical equipment, and home modifications, Barnhard established the organization to address these critical needs for others facing similar circumstances. The foundation was originally known as Wheels With Wings Foundation before becoming Motion Project Foundation.

- Promoting physical independence and hope for those affected by spinal cord injuries.
The foundation envisions creating a dedicated center for spinal cord injury rehabilitation and recovery in Western New York, where clients can access state-of-the-art equipment, exceptionally trained therapists, and research-driven care. This vision culminated in the opening of the Natalie Barnhard Center for Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation and Recovery, a facility designed to support clients through their recovery journeys.

Motion Project Foundation provides financial assistance to cover:
- Intense therapy rehabilitation programs.
- Adaptive medical equipment such as Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) bikes.
- Home and vehicle modifications to accommodate physical challenges.

💬 Mental Health Tip – from Connor Gow of Motion Project Foundation Sometimes strength doesn’t look like doing it all on your own. It looks like leaning into others when you need support. When you're wheelchair-bound, everyday tasks can be challenging — physically, mentally, and emotionally. And while independence is empowering, asking for help is just as powerful. It’s not a weakness; it’s a way to build connection, community, and resilience. Connor reminds us this Mental Health Awareness Month that vulnerability is strength and that none of us are meant to do life alone 🤜🏼🤛🏼 If you’re struggling, reach out. There are people who care, and there is no shame in needing a hand! (fb)
