This week’s Choral Connections feature shines a spotlight on Katy Akinskas (Soprano 1) and Meredith Lowden (Soprano 1). Katy & Meredith have been singing together since they were knee-high to a grasshopper. Actually Meredith was born 6 feet tall but you get the idea. The story probably starts with their dads, Jeff Lowden & Rob Reimer - the choir director at Shawnee High School and band director at Cherokee High School, respectively - in the 1980’s-2000ish. The Reimers and Lowdens were like peas and carrots, both families of music teachers who settled in the same neighborhood in Marlton in 1989. Meredith & Katy grew up less than a block away from each other, and their first duets could be heard on the back of the school bus in Barton Run on their way to Beeler Elementary School. In 3rd grade Meredith started on the violin and Katy took up the cello. There were probably duets on those instruments as well but the memories are a little foggy. In middle school they sang together in Marlton’s district choir (ShowBiz Kids!) At Cherokee HS they were the only freshmen who auditioned for and were accepted into the “elite” Concert Choir, so by 9th grade their egos were…substantial. Every year they auditioned for All South Jersey and All State Chorus, and more than once they were section leaders for Soprano 1 (Katy) and Soprano 2 (Meredith). In 2001 they sang with the All Eastern Chorus in Pittsburgh, PA. In 2001 they graduated and went their separate ways - Meredith to Westminster Choir College and Katy to TCNJ. They both majored in Voice / Music Education. Now they are both music teachers in South Jersey (of course) and so happy to be singing together again in Greater South Jersey Chorus! (fb)
