The Heartland Museum of Military Vehicles (HMMV) is a non-profit organization located in Lexington, Nebraska, United States. It was established in 1986 by four local men dedicated to preserving and restoring historical military vehicles.
Mission and Activities
HMMV operates as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation primarily funded by donations and grants. The museum focuses on the restoration, preservation, and display of military equipment to honor those who have served in the military. Its collection includes about 100 vehicles such as helicopters, tanks, half-tracks, ambulances, and jeeps from every branch of service. Additionally, the museum features displays of military weapons, uniforms, engines, equipment, and everyday soldier necessities like Meals Ready to Eat (MREs).
History
The founders began their efforts by showcasing restored vehicles at Veterans' Day events, allowing veterans to interact with the vehicles. In 1991, the museum secured a permanent site near Interstate 80. By 1998, a 16,000-square-foot visitor center was constructed to house the growing collection. Over the years, the museum has expanded its facilities to accommodate more vehicles and exhibits. This expansion was made possible through donations and fundraising efforts.
Features
HMMV is known for its interactive approach, allowing visitors to closely view and even sit in some of the vehicles. The museum is open daily except for Christmas and New Year's Day, and admission is by donation. It serves as both an educational resource and a tribute to military service, providing a hands-on experience for visitors interested in military history and technology.
Collection Highlights
The collection spans various military branches and includes unique items such as a Downed Airman Retriever, one of only a few remaining in the world. The museum's library supports accurate restorations with detailed research on vehicle specifications and historical contexts.

Operated by volunteers, HMMV continues to rely on community support through donations and volunteer work. This collaborative effort ensures the preservation of military history and provides an engaging experience for visitors.
