Overview
New York Youth Symphony Inc., commonly known as the New York Youth Symphony (NYYS), is a nonprofit organization founded in 1963. It is dedicated to providing music education and performance opportunities to talented young musicians from the New York metropolitan area. The organization has been recognized as one of the most prestigious youth symphonies in the nation and world, offering programs in various genres of music, including classical, jazz, and musical theatre.
History and Programs
The NYYS was established to nurture the musical talents of young people aged 12 to 22. Over the years, it has expanded its programs to include:
- Orchestra Program: The flagship program, renowned for its performances at Carnegie Hall, where members showcase their skills alongside established soloists and debut artists through the Roy and Shirley Durst Debut Series.
- Chamber Music Program: Offers opportunities for players to develop their musicality and interpersonal skills through small ensemble performances and masterclasses with distinguished musicians.
- Jazz Program: Focuses on studying and performing classic big band jazz, as well as new works by emerging composers.
- Composition Program: A pioneering series of workshops for young composers and orchestrators, emphasizing the creation of new music.
- Musical Theater Songwriting Program: Provides a comprehensive learning experience in the songwriting process for musical theater.
- Apprentice Conducting Program: Offers aspiring conductors training in technique, score analysis, and performance under the guidance of experienced conductors.
Innovative Initiatives
One of the distinguishing features of the NYYS is its innovative commissioning program, First Music. Established in 1984, this program selects young composers under the age of 30 to create new works for the NYYS ensembles. Notable commissions have included works by David Lang, Augusta Read Thomas, Julia Wolfe, and Aaron Jay Kernis.
Achievements
In recent years, the NYYS has achieved historic milestones, such as being the first youth orchestra to win a Grammy Award in the category of Best Orchestral Performance in 2023. This achievement underscores the organization's commitment to nurturing exceptional musical talent and pushing boundaries in music education and performance.
Governance
The NYYS operates under a board of directors composed of professionals from various sectors, ensuring strategic leadership and support for its programs. The organization is led by a team of music educators and conductors dedicated to fostering musical excellence and personal growth among its members.
Impact
Through its multifaceted programs and performances, the NYYS not only provides musical education but also instills valuable life skills such as collaboration, discipline, and creativity. By giving talented young musicians the opportunity to perform at world-class venues, the NYYS plays a significant role in shaping the next generation of musicians and contributing to the cultural landscape of New York City and beyond.
