As Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month comes to a close, we reflect on and celebrate the contributions, history, and culture of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in the United States. May is designated as AAPI Heritage Month to commemorate moments like the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the U.S. on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, where Chinese immigrants played a vital role. The month was officially recognized in 1992. The Boston metropolitan area is home to a vibrant Chinese American community. As of 2013, Boston’s Chinatown ranked as the third largest in the United States, with additional Chinese populations thriving in nearby suburbs such as Quincy, Malden, Acton, Newton, and Lexington Let’s honor these legacies by continuing to uplift AAPI voices, support local communities, and work toward a future rooted in justice and inclusion.
