Evans Scholars Foundation
The Evans Scholars Foundation is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to deserving caddies. Established in 1930, it is the nation's largest scholarship program for caddies, offering full tuition and housing scholarships.
History
The foundation was founded by Charles "Chick" Evans Jr., a renowned amateur golfer, in collaboration with the Western Golf Association (WGA). Evans, who won both the U.S. Open and U.S. Amateur in 1916, was committed to using his fame to help financially needy caddies gain access to higher education. Initially, the scholarships were awarded to send young caddies to Northwestern University. Over time, the program expanded to include more than 24 leading universities across the United States.
Mission and Purpose
The Evans Scholars Foundation aims to bridge the financial gap for high-achieving caddies with limited financial means, allowing them to attend college and excel academically and professionally. The scholarship is awarded based on a strong caddie record, academic excellence, demonstrated financial need, and outstanding character.
Scholarship Program
To qualify for the Evans Scholarship, applicants must:
- Have caddied for at least two years.
- Maintain above a B average in college preparatory courses.
- Demonstrate a clear need for financial assistance.
- Display outstanding character and leadership.
Scholarship Houses
Evans Scholars live together in community houses at their respective universities. This communal living environment fosters leadership skills, communication, and a supportive community. The program boasts a remarkable 95% graduation rate, significantly higher than national averages.
Impact
Since its inception, more than 12,040 students have graduated as Evans Scholars. The foundation's model has proven successful in preparing students for both academic and professional success, with a significant percentage of graduates securing employment or attending graduate school shortly after completing their degrees.
Governance and Funding
The foundation is governed and supported by the Western Golf Association and funded through contributions from supporters and proceeds from golf championships. It has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for its sound fiscal management and accountability.
