League of Women Voters of Connecticut Inc.
The League of Women Voters of Connecticut Inc. (LWVCT) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to civic engagement and voter education. It is part of the broader League of Women Voters network, which was founded in 1920 at the conclusion of the women's suffrage movement in the United States.
History
The Connecticut chapter of the League of Women Voters was established on January 18, 1921, in New Haven, Connecticut. This initiative followed the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. The initial purpose of LWVCT was to develop a high level of civic awareness and legislative engagement among women voters. Mabel C. Washburn was elected as the first president of the organization.
In its first year, LWVCT formed local and county leagues and established seven standing committees focused on issues such as citizenship, legal status of women, election laws, food supply, social hygiene, child welfare, and women in industry. These committees were responsible for studying issues, preparing publications, and advising on state legislation.
Mission and Activities
LWVCT continues the tradition of its parent organization by advocating for voting rights, empowering voters, and promoting nonpartisan civic engagement. The organization supports voter education initiatives, hosts candidate forums, and advocates for legislative reforms. It is committed to maintaining a nonpartisan stance and does not endorse political candidates or parties.
Notable Figures
Several notable women have played significant roles in LWVCT's history. Katherine Ludington, a founding member of the Old Lyme Equal Suffrage League, was instrumental in promoting suffrage efforts in Connecticut. Josephine Beach Day Bennett contributed to the organization of citizenship schools and held leadership positions within LWVCT. Her work aimed to educate women on local, state, and federal politics.
Impact
Through its advocacy and education efforts, LWVCT has contributed significantly to democratic participation and civic awareness in Connecticut. The organization remains active in promoting voting rights and fostering informed citizenship, reflecting its ongoing commitment to the principles established during its founding in 1921.
