American Legion Auxiliary
Overview

The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) is a patriotic service organization established in 1919. It was founded during the first National Convention of The American Legion to support veterans, military personnel, and their families. The ALA is one of the largest women's patriotic organizations in the world.

History

The ALA was conceived at the inaugural National Convention of The American Legion in 1919. Initially known as the Women's Auxiliary to The American Legion, it quickly grew, forming 1,342 local units across 45 states by 1920. At its first national convention in 1921, the organization adopted the name American Legion Auxiliary. Edith Irwin Hobart served as the Auxiliary's first president.

Over the decades, the ALA expanded rapidly, especially after World War II, reaching a peak of over one million members in 1955. It has maintained a significant presence since then, with thousands of units across the United States and abroad.

Purpose

The primary mission of the ALA is to support The American Legion while honoring the sacrifices of veterans and their families. The organization advocates for veterans' rights, educates citizens, mentors youth, and promotes patriotism, good citizenship, peace, and security.

Eligibility

Membership is open to spouses, mothers, daughters, granddaughters, and other female descendants of American war veterans, as well as male spouses following constitutional changes in 2019.

Programs

The ALA engages in various community service programs, including:

  • Americanism: Promotes patriotism and U.S. values.
  • Children and Youth: Supports youth development and education.
  • Community Service: Focuses on aiding veterans and local communities.
  • Education: Provides scholarships and educational opportunities.
  • ALA Girls Nation: Offers leadership development for young women.
  • Legislative: Advocates for veterans' rights through legislative efforts.
  • National Security: Involves initiatives related to national defense.
  • Poppy: Uses the poppy symbol to honor deceased veterans and raise awareness.
  • Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation: Works to improve lives of veterans through numerous support programs.
Impact

The ALA plays a crucial role in supporting veterans by providing extensive community service, organizing educational events, and advocating for policies that benefit military families. This organization continues to be a significant force in community service and veterans' support efforts.
