On this day in 1945, Norway was liberated after five years of German occupation. Today Norway celebrates the milestone of 80 years of freedom after five years of war and occupation, and remembers and honors those who sacrificed their lives on behalf of Norway: war sailors, resistance fighters and civilians. Today is also Norway's Veterans Day. Since Norway became a free country again on May 8, 1945, more than 100,000 Norwegian women and men have participated in over 100 international operations in the fight for peace and human dignity. Communities all over Norway will commemorate 80 years of freedom, and King Harald and Crown Prince Haakon Magnus and other dignitaries will attend the national ceremony at Akershus Fortress in Oslo.
