The USDA McGovern-Dole Food for Education school feeding program in Laos, which CRS manages, helped increase student attendance by reducing illness due to hunger, improve literacy, build school gardens, upgrade schools, install school water supply systems and more. And here in the United States, American farmers who grow the food used in the program also benefit, providing income for their own families while also feeding children abroad. These terminations aren’t just broken agreements with CRS. They’re broken promises to children, to American farmers, to entire communities.
