Friends of Second Chances Canine Program

The Second Chances Canine Program provides shelter dogs a “Second Chance” which in turn helps inmates strive to redirect their own lives.  The Marion Adjustment Center has partnered with our local animal shelter and community of volunteers.Our number one goal is saving the lives of dogs and reducing the number euthanized each year. However, we are equally committed to helping inmates learn needed life skills, such as responsibility, patience and compassion, as well as appropriate job skills, while gaining a sense of giving “something” back to society.The inmate/handler receives special training and in turn socializes dogs to be well-behaved canines. The program’s handlers work with each dog on socialization, housetraining, leash training and basic commands.Our program understands that an obedience-trained dog reduces the risk of owners’ surrendering their pet to local animal shelters. As a mutual rehabilitation program, our aim is for both inmate and dog to become better citizens.
