K is for KERATIN. - Scutes, which are the sections you can see on a tortoise’s shell, are made of keratin. Our fingernails and hair are made up of keratin. - This layer of keratin is over a layer of epithelium, this then covers the bone that makes up the shell. - As the tortoise grows the scutes grow with a new layer of keratin secreted by the epithelium. You can see it well in the photo. - Tortoises have a layer of nerves under the keratin. This means they can feel touch and temperature. Photo credit: Tom Astle (fb)
