Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Overview Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is a historically African American fraternity founded on November 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. It was the first international fraternal organization established on the campus of a historically black college[1][2][3].
Founding and Early Years
The fraternity was founded by three Howard University undergraduates: Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper, and Frank Coleman. They were assisted by their faculty adviser, Dr. Ernest Everett Just. The name "Omega Psi Phi" was derived from the Greek phrase "Ophelema Phelia Psukas," meaning "Friendship is Essential to the Soul," which became the fraternity's motto[1][2][3]. The four cardinal principles of Omega Psi Phi are Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift[1][2].
In the early years, Omega Psi Phi faced initial resistance from Howard University, which did not recognize it as a national organization. However, the fraternity persisted, and by 1914, it gained official recognition and was incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia on October 28, 1914[1][3]. The Beta Chapter was chartered at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania in February 1914, marking a significant expansion beyond Howard University[4].
Leadership and Chapters
Oscar James Cooper became the fraternityโs second Grand Basileus in 1912, and Edgar Amos Love served as the third Grand Basileus from 1912 to 1915[1][4]. Over the years, Omega Psi Phi has grown internationally, including the establishment of Sigma Chapter at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, on December 15, 1923, and Lambda Chapter at the University of Southern California in 1923[3][4].
Social Impact and Activities
Omega Psi Phi has been actively involved in social justice and community service. Members have participated in significant civil rights initiatives, such as the "sit-ins," and have supported organizations like the NAACP[4]. The fraternity also launched "Operation Big Vote" in 1976, aimed at increasing voter turnout among African Americans[3][4]. Additionally, Omega Psi Phi has contributed to educational institutions, including a significant pledge to the United Negro College Fund in 1979[3][4].
Notable Members
Many notable figures have been members of Omega Psi Phi, including Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as the father of Black History Month, and Robert H. Lawrence, the first African American astronaut candidate[4][5]. The fraternity's influence extends across various fields, with members playing roles in academia, politics, arts, and community leadership.
Legacy
Today, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is recognized for its commitment to community service, scholarship, and leadership development. It continues to grow and support its members and communities globally, remaining a vital part of African American history and culture.
