Knights of Columbus

The Knights of Columbus is a global Catholic fraternal service order founded by Blessed Michael J. McGivney on March 29, 1882, in New Haven, Connecticut. Initially conceived as a mutual benefit society for working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States, it has evolved into a prominent charitable organization and a major insurance provider.

History

The organization was founded during a time when Roman Catholics faced discrimination in labor unions and other fraternal organizations. McGivney envisioned an alternative society that would provide insurance benefits while fostering pride in both Catholic and American heritages. By taking the name "Knights of Columbus," the founders aimed to emphasize that Catholics were integral to American society.

The Knights of Columbus is guided by the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. The organization supports a wide range of charitable activities, including disaster relief, refugee aid, and health initiatives. Notably, they have donated significantly to victims of natural disasters and provided substantial support to persecuted Christians in the Middle East. Their charitable efforts also include funding ultrasound machines to support pregnancy centers and providing scholarships for seminarians.

Membership and Structure

Membership is open to practicing Catholic men, while women may participate through affiliated groups like the Columbiettes, and boys can join the Columbian Squires. The Order operates over 17,000 local councils worldwide, including many on college campuses.

Philanthropy

Charity is central to the Knights' mission. They have donated extensively to various causes, including over $190 million in charitable contributions and 47 million volunteer-hours in 2023 alone. This includes significant support for refugees, such as providing relief during the Russia-Ukraine conflict and aiding asylum seekers at the US-Mexico border.

The Knights of Columbus operates a large insurance company and manages financial investments in alignment with Catholic teachings. Their wholly-owned insurance company underwrites millions of contracts, totaling over $121 billion in life insurance.

The organization is led by the Supreme Knight, currently Patrick E. Kelly, and supported by the Supreme Chaplain, William E. Lori.

Throughout its history, the Knights of Columbus has been influential in promoting Catholic views in social and political discourse. The organization has also played a significant role in supporting soldiers during wartime and engaging in anti-discrimination efforts.
