State Endangered Species in Care! A male Blackpoll Warbler was recently admitted after colliding with a window. Thankfully, the collision was witnessed by someone who knew this bird needed help immediately and brought him to Tamarack. With a treatment plan of medication, nutritious food, and other supportive care, this bird is improving daily. We anticipate a successful release. Blackpoll Warblers are masters of migration! This tiny bird, weighing in at just 12-13 grams (the weight of a AAA battery), has the longest migration of any North American warbler. Each fall, Blackpoll Warblers undertake an amazing journey from northern North America to their wintering grounds in the South American Amazon. What makes this migration so special is that these birds migrate 2,000 miles across open water without stopping or eating, a journey that may take 80 straight hours! Historically, this species was more abundant in northern Pennsylvania conifer forests and wetlands, but habitat loss, including extensive logging, has reduced their populations. (fb)

Young Bald Eagle Flies Free After Treatment for a Fractured Wing A two year old Bald Eagle took to the skies recently after 7 months in treatment. When his carrier door was opened, he flew powerfully and circled to land in a tree. Then took off again to soar higher and higher, riding the air currents for 15 minutes before disappearing from view. Thanks to our supporters and passionate staff, he is back home in the sky. The eagle was found in debilitated condition on October 1 last year, near railroad tracks on E Zwilling Rd in Erie, leading to his nickname "Trax." Caring, observant members of the public alerted our center, and at the request of the Game Commission, he was captured by TWC volunteer Dorothy Krupa. His recovery involved care for a fractured humerus bone, and treatment for starvation. It is likely he was injured in a vehicle collision while feeding near a road, and then was unable to secure food. In the first week of treatment, it was touch and go whether Trax would recover. Over time, he regained vigor and health. By the time of his release, he had become an athlete in our large eagle aviary. Thank you to all who made his treatment and recovery possible. May your spirits soar with him. (fb)
