Shorecrest faculty, staff, families, and students gathered recently to celebrate the retirement of Mrs. Joanne Minke, a true Shorecrest icon. Mrs. Joanne Minke began teaching at Shorecrest in 1979 and has taught generations of Shorecrest students as one of the longest tenured teachers in school history. Mrs. Minke has made an impact on the lives of thousands of students and families, primarily in her beloved role teaching kindergarten. She says, “It's exciting to watch the children's growth in confidence, independence, responsibility, social skills, and academic skills. It's such a fun age!” Known among her peer teachers as a lifelong learner, Mrs. Minke models a passion for learning for her young students. Head of Lower School Dr. Lisa Bianco says, "Joanne gives 100% of herself to the role and responsibilities of being a kindergarten teacher - a position which requires tremendous preparation, care, patience, surveillance and energy." Mrs. Minke has created beloved Shorecrest traditions in kindergarten classrooms that alumni still hold dear, including Quilting Day, the Bag of Books program, and handmade kindergarten birthday vests. She generously shares her many skills and vast knowledge, whether through teaching students or friends to sew, leading a booth at STEAMfest or mentoring new Shorecrest teachers, to name a few.
