Description

Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois

The Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois, better known as Landmarks Illinois, is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and promoting architectural and historic resources across the state of Illinois. It was founded in 1971, following the demolition of the historic Chicago Stock Exchange Building, designed by Adler and Sullivan.

History

The council was established in response to the significant loss of architectural landmarks in Illinois, particularly the destruction of the Chicago Stock Exchange Building. This event galvanized public awareness and action to save other historic buildings from similar fates.

Mission

Landmarks Illinois aims to preserve, protect, and promote Illinois's cultural and historical heritage through advocacy, education, and community engagement. The organization believes in blending old and new structures to create resilient and vibrant communities.

Activities

  • Advocacy and Education: The organization provides advocacy services to protect threatened historic sites and educates communities on the importance of preservation.
  • Technical Assistance and Support: Landmarks Illinois offers technical assistance and resources to help communities and property owners preserve historic buildings.
  • Grants and Funding: The council provides small grants to support restoration and preservation projects across Illinois.
  • Community Engagement: Landmarks Illinois hosts various events, including the annual Legendary Landmarks Celebration, to raise awareness and honor contributions to historic preservation.

Governance

The organization is governed by a Board of Directors, which consists of dedicated volunteers who contribute intellectual, professional, and financial support. The board plays a crucial role in guiding the strategic direction of Landmarks Illinois.

Impact

In its over four decades of operation, Landmarks Illinois has saved numerous historic sites and structures throughout Illinois, making it a leading voice in statewide preservation efforts. The organization has grown to include over 2,500 members who share its mission to protect and celebrate Illinois's architectural heritage.
