Evans Scholars Foundation
The Evans Scholars Foundation is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to providing full tuition and housing college scholarships to caddies from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Established in 1930, it operates one of the nation's largest privately funded college scholarship programs.
History
The Foundation was co-founded by Charles “Chick” Evans Jr., a renowned amateur golfer, and the Western Golf Association. Evans became famous in 1916 after winning both the U.S. Open and the U.S. Amateur, marking a historic achievement in golf. He remained an amateur throughout his career, using his earnings to establish a trust fund for caddies.
The first two Evans Scholars enrolled at Northwestern University in 1930, marking the beginning of a legacy that has seen over 12,000 students graduate as Evans Scholars. The program grew significantly following World War II, expanding across multiple universities.
Program Overview
The Evans Scholarship is offered to caddies who demonstrate a strong caddie record, excellent academics, financial need, and outstanding character. Applicants must have caddied for at least two years and be enrolled in college preparatory courses with a B average or higher. The scholarship covers full tuition and housing for up to four years at participating universities.
Currently, 1,130 Evans Scholars are enrolled at 24 leading universities nationwide. Scholars reside in community-driven houses where they develop leadership and communication skills. These houses foster a sense of community and empowerment, contributing to a graduation rate of over 95%, significantly higher than the national average.
Selection Criteria
To be eligible for the Evans Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Strong caddie record: Regular and successful caddying experience for at least two years.
- Excellent academics: Above a B average in college preparatory courses.
- Demonstrated financial need: Clear necessity for financial assistance.
- Outstanding character: Demonstrated integrity, leadership, and community involvement.
Funding and Partnerships
The Evans Scholars Fundraising efforts are supported by the Western Golf Association (WGA), which conducts tournaments like the BMW Championship, with all proceeds benefiting the Evans Scholars Foundation. The WGA Evans Scholars Par Club, consisting of thousands of golfers, also provides significant funding.
Impact
The Evans Scholars Foundation has had a profound impact on education by facilitating access to higher education for deserving caddies, enhancing their academic and personal development through a supportive community environment. The program's emphasis on community living and leadership development has been instrumental in fostering academic excellence and extracurricular success among its scholars.
