Williamstown First United Methodist Church

The Williamstown First United Methodist Church is a former United Methodist congregation located in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Historically, the Methodist presence in Williamstown dates back to the early 19th century, with the first Methodists facing persecution and challenges as they established their community.

History

The first Methodist church in Williamstown was a white frame building constructed in 1845 at a cost of $2,400, thanks to the efforts of Summer Southworth, a local cotton goods manufacturer[1]. As the congregation grew, a larger red brick church was built in 1872 with Southworth contributing $8,000 towards its construction. This church was dedicated on March 6, 1872[1].

The church played a significant role in community life, hosting social events and fundraisers such as annual tag sales. It was also a venue for transformative projects, like turning its second floor into a youth center in the 1970s to provide a gathering place for local teenagers[1].

Merger

In 2010, the church voted in favor of merging with the First United Methodist Church of North Adams, effective January 1, 2011. This decision included putting the Williamstown church building up for sale, a move that not all members supported[1].

Legacy

Despite the merger, the congregation remains a vibrant part of the community's spiritual and social fabric, reflecting the broader values of the United Methodist Church, which emphasize connectionalism, outreach, and social justice[2].
