Independent Order of Odd Fellows

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) is a fraternal organization founded in the United States with origins tracing back to the British Odd Fellows. It was formally established on April 26, 1819, by Thomas Wildey in Baltimore, Maryland.

History

The IOOF evolved from the English Order of Odd Fellows, which dates back to the 18th century. Early Odd Fellow groups in England were formed to provide mutual aid, reflecting the societal challenges of the time, including high mortality rates and economic hardships[4][5]. In North America, Thomas Wildey, along with four other members from England, instituted Washington Lodge No. 1 in Baltimore, officially marking the beginning of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. Initially chartered by the Manchester Unity in England, the IOOF became independent in 1842 due to disagreements over governance and authority[1][2][3].

Mission and Purpose

The mission of the IOOF is encapsulated in its motto: "Visit the sick, relieve the distressed, bury the dead and educate the orphan." This mission reflects the organization's commitment to charity and community support. The IOOF is also known as the Triple Link Fraternity, symbolizing its core values of Friendship, Love, and Truth[2][4]. The organization promotes altruism and fraternal bonds among its members, fostering a culture of mutual aid and social responsibility.

Structure and Membership

Today, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows is one of the largest fraternal organizations in the world, with approximately 10,000 lodges across 26 countries and a membership of about 600,000[2][3]. The IOOF operates under the leadership of a Sovereign Grand Lodge and has become inclusive, allowing women to join since 2001[2][5]. In 1851, it became the first national fraternity in the United States to include women when it adopted the Degree of Rebekah, an auxiliary organization dedicated to women's participation[1][4].

Financial Status

The organization functions as a 501(c)(8) fraternal benefit society, with significant financial operations supporting its charitable and fraternal activities[2].

Legacy and Impact

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows has played a significant role in the history of fraternal organizations in the United States and internationally. It has been at the forefront of charitable work and community service, providing aid to orphans, sick individuals, and distressed families[2][4]. The IOOF's emphasis on Friendship, Love, and Truth resonates with its members worldwide, fostering a strong bond among them as they engage in philanthropic activities.

I work in a nonprofit and listing our organization on Eduo.org helped us reach new audiences and even new volunteers. It’s easy to use and feels built with love.
