Phi Sigma Rho National Sorority

Phi Sigma Rho National Sorority is a US nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting women in engineering and engineering technology. Founded on September 24, 1984, at Purdue University, it became the first social sorority specifically for women engineers.

Founding and Mission

Phi Sigma Rho was founded by Abby McDonald and Rashmi Khanna, two women who were unable to participate in traditional sorority recruitment due to the demanding schedule of their engineering program. They envisioned a sorority that would provide a supportive environment for women in engineering, combining social interactions with academic focus.

The sorority's mission is to develop personal integrity, promote academic excellence, support personal achievement, and foster lifelong bonds of sisterhood. It aims to be the foremost sorority for women in engineering and engineering technology.

Structure and Chapters

Phi Sigma Rho has expanded to over 40 chapters across the United States. Each chapter operates under the principles of the sorority, promoting a balance between academic rigor and social engagement.

Philanthropy and Community Involvement

Phi Sigma Rho is committed to philanthropic activities, particularly supporting organizations such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The sorority's philanthropic efforts are often coordinated through its foundation, which also awards scholarships to support educational pursuits.

Values and Activities

The core values of Phi Sigma Rho include friendship, scholarship, and encouragement. The sorority organizes various events and activities that unite its members in shared professional ambitions and support personal growth.

History

Since its inception, Phi Sigma Rho has grown significantly, evolving from a single chapter to a national network of chapters. This growth reflects the increasing presence of women in engineering and the need for organizations like Phi Sigma Rho to provide support and community.

Notable Achievements

Phi Sigma Rho chapters receive various awards for their academic achievements and community involvement, demonstrating the organization's commitment to excellence and community service.
