Description

Catholic Labor Network

The Catholic Labor Network is a 501c3 organization based at Georgetown University. It serves as a platform for Catholics, including laypeople, religious leaders, and clergy, who are inspired by Catholic Social Teaching on labor and work. The organization aims to promote worker justice and support working individuals through solidarity with labor unions, parishes, and other organizations.

History

The Catholic Labor Network was formed in the aftermath of significant labor events in the 1990s, particularly the Staley lockout in Decatur, Illinois, which galvanized labor priests and activists to organize a conference, ultimately leading to the network's establishment in 1996. Fr. Sinclair Oubre has been actively involved since its inception and serves as the Spiritual Moderator of the group.

Mission

The Catholic Labor Network is dedicated to advancing the cause of workers and promoting Catholic Social Teaching in labor and work environments. It aligns with encyclicals like Rerum Novarum, which supports workers' rights to organize and engage in collective bargaining. The network also addresses contemporary labor issues, advocating for policies that protect workers' rights and oppose actions threatening union rights.

Leadership and Involvement

Clayton Sinyai is the Executive Director of the Catholic Labor Network. He has extensive experience in union roles and is the author of Schools of Democracy: A Political History of the American Labor Movement. Other notable members include Fr. Clete Kiley, who has been involved in labor and immigration issues for many years.

Collaboration

The Catholic Labor Network collaborates with initiatives like the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor at Georgetown University. This initiative focuses on empowering workers to build an equitable economy by convening labor organizations, scholars, and policymakers. The Catholic Labor Network's work supports the broader goals of worker justice and economic equity through these partnerships.

Activities and Reports

The network has released reports on issues such as wage theft in the construction industry, highlighting its commitment to addressing workplace injustices and advocating for workers' rights. Through these efforts, the Catholic Labor Network continues to support the principles of social justice and workers' dignity as outlined in Catholic Social Teaching.
