LUCYS HOUSE FOR THE PREVENTION OF HOMELESS PETS

Follow Message Edit

Lucy's House for the Prevention of Homeless Pets' mission is to keep pets in their homes and reduce the number of animals being surrendered to shelters or abandoned by providing donations of pet food to low to moderate income households, the disabled, military families, and elderly. At Lucy's House we work to reduce senior hunger by providing them with pet food so they do not give their pets their food. In our work we understand the value of unconditional love and companionship animals give to seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities to reduce isolation and loneliness through their presence in their homes. We support emergency medical care for pets through our medical fund. We work to reduce homelessness in cats and overpopulation.

Lucy's House for the Prevention of Homeless Pets

Lucy's House for the Prevention of Homeless Pets is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to keeping pets in their homes and reducing the number of animals surrendered to shelters. It operates in partnership with organizations like Best Friends Animal Society as part of a larger network aimed at animal welfare.

Mission

The mission of Lucy's House is to support low-to-moderate-income households, the disabled, and the elderly by providing pet food and other forms of support. This helps alleviate the financial stress associated with pet ownership, particularly during unexpected economic challenges. The organization recognizes the emotional and psychological benefits that pets provide, especially for the elderly and those with limited mobility, and seeks to prevent the distress of pet abandonment.

Programs
  • Pet Food Assistance: Lucy's House provides donations of pet food to families in need, helping them to maintain their pets during difficult times.
  • Medical Support: The organization offers medical support to pets, ensuring they can receive necessary care without their owners having to surrender them due to financial constraints.
  • Homemade Pet Toys: By organizing community events where homemade pet toys are made, Lucy's House encourages creative and cost-effective ways for pet owners to entertain and care for their pets.
  • Community Outreach: The organization engages in community outreach activities to raise awareness about the importance of keeping pets in their homes.
Structure

Lucy's House is notable for being a 100% volunteer-based organization. This means that all donations directly support their programs and services, with no salaries or overhead costs detracting from the mission.

Origins

The organization was inspired by the story of an abandoned American Stafford Terrier named Lucy, who was adopted by the founders during family medical challenges. Despite her tragic early death from a rare heart condition, her memory motivated the founders to establish an organization aimed at preventing other pets from experiencing similar abandonment and hardship.

Impact

Lucy's House has experienced significant growth in demand for its services, with the number of people served tripling over the past two years. The organization relies on donations and partnerships with local businesses to meet this growing need.
