Church of the Ascension 36 Fifth Avenue at 10th Street From an austere beginning as a bastion of the evangelical movement, Church of the Ascension has become internationally known for its art, music, and liturgy. Designed by Richard Upjohn in the Gothic Revival style in 1841, it was the first church of many that would eventually be built on Fifth Avenue. It was also New York's first church to be faced with brownstone. Its stained glass windows are among the best in New York– John LaFarge's Nicodemus Coming to Jesus by Night is a great example. The interior was remodeled by Stanford White in 1885-89, and its parish house was altered to its current state in 1888-89 by McKim, Mead and White.
