National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution

The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (NSSAR or SAR) is a federally chartered nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and educating future generations about the founding principles of the United States.

History

The SAR was founded on April 30, 1889, in New York City by William Osborn McDowell. It was established during the centennial anniversary of George Washington's inauguration as the first U.S. President. The organization emerged as an alternative to the Sons of the Revolution, which was founded earlier in 1876. The SAR aimed to be more inclusive, focusing on being a mass movement of descendants of Revolutionary patriots rather than an exclusive social club.

Objectives

The SAR's objectives include:

  • Promoting Patriotism: Encouraging appreciation for true patriotism and respect for national symbols.
  • Preserving History: Preserving American history and teaching it to future generations.
  • Educational Efforts: Inspiring future generations about the founding principles of the United States.

Membership

Membership in the SAR is open to male descendants of Patriots involved in the American Revolution, such as those who signed the Declaration of Independence, served in the Continental Congress, or otherwise supported the cause of American independence.

Activities

The SAR actively participates in promoting patriotic events and has played a role in establishing national observances like Constitution Day, Flag Day, and Bill of Rights Day. The organization also engages in community service activities.

International Reach

While primarily U.S.-based, the SAR has members in several countries, including Canada, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Affiliations

The SAR is affiliated with other lineage organizations, including the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Children of the American Revolution.

Congressional Charter

The SAR was granted a congressional charter on June 9, 1906, under Title 36 of the United States Code.
