Overview

Sonshine Folk School Farm Inc. is a nonprofit organization focused on youth development and agricultural education. It operates as a Christian ministry with a dual mission: to provide work training for youth and to supply produce to those in need. The organization is recognized as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, allowing donations to be tax-deductible.

Mission and Activities

The primary target population for the Folk School Farm is middle school and high school-aged individuals, with no restrictions on race, religion, nationality, or socio-economic status. The farm offers a drug-free environment where youth can learn significant life skills through activities such as gardening and equipment operation. It aims to assist young people by providing an environment where they can discover their worth as children of God while acquiring work and social skills.

The farm is also involved in broader community outreach, partnering with local organizations to distribute vegetables to those in need. In recent years, it has collaborated with entities like The Fix and The Mother's Heart for vegetable distribution and participated in local food distributions.

Financials and Governance

Financially, Sonshine Folk School Farm Inc. relies heavily on contributions, which make up the majority of its revenue. As of recent filings, contributions accounted for approximately 95% of its total income. The organization's total assets have grown over time, reaching over $325,000 in recent years, with liabilities being minimal.

The governance structure includes several directors and executive roles, with no reported compensation for key personnel. This reflects the organization's commitment to volunteer service and community support.

Long-term Vision

Long-term goals of the Sonshine Folk School Farm include expanding its operations to improve self-sufficiency through increased vegetable sales and exploring additional ventures like woodworking projects. The organization also plans to establish an orchard and vineyard, further enhancing its agricultural offerings.

Leadership and Experience

Andrew Sloane, the Executive Director, brings extensive experience as a public school teacher and building contractor to the organization. His background has shaped the farm's focus on mentorship and skill-building for youth.

Location and Facilities

Located in Virginia, the farm operates on a property near Fleets Mill Pond in King and Queen County. The organization's development includes the construction of facilities like high tunnel greenhouses, supported by USDA grants, and plans for additional structures to support educational and community activities.
