Overview

The Vietnam Dog Handler Association Inc. (VDHA) is a U.S. nonprofit organization founded by six veteran war dog handlers in 1993. Its mission is to reunite veteran war dog handlers and honor the memory of their war dog partners.

History and Goals

The VDHA emerged from a shared experience of soldiers who bonded with dogs under the stress of war. The organization grew from its initial six members to approximately 3,000 members, including veteran war dog handlers and supporters. Their core objectives include educating the public on the accomplishments of dog handlers in the U.S. Armed Forces and supporting projects that memorialize military dogs.

Activities and Achievements

VDHA has been involved in various patriotic events and has featured in media projects, including the documentary "War Dogs, America’s Forgotten Heroes." The association plays a role in war dog memorial projects across the United States. One of their significant goals was to persuade the U.S. Postal Service to issue a War Dog Stamp, which honors the service and sacrifice of military dogs.

Impact and Context

During the Vietnam War, nearly 4,000 specially trained dogs played crucial roles in combat, reportedly saving tens of thousands of U.S. troops. Despite their heroism, most dogs were left behind due to being classified as equipment. This led to efforts by handlers to change policies, resulting in "Robby's Law" in 2000, which ensures that adoptable military dogs are not euthanized but are offered to former handlers and law enforcement first.

Current Initiatives

The VDHA continues to support veterans and advocates for the recognition of military dogs' contributions. They also work on projects such as the dedication of war dog memorials and participate in documentaries and interviews to share the stories of Vietnam-era dog handlers. The association remains committed to preserving the history and legacy of military dogs and their handlers.
