Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas

The Ancient Free & Accepted Masons of Texas, often referred to as the Grand Lodge of Texas, is a prominent nonprofit organization and governing body of Freemasonry in the state of Texas. This organization belongs to the Ancient tradition of Freemasonry, descended from the Ancient Grand Lodge of England, established on June 17, 1751.

Formation and History

The Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas, A.F. & A.M., was founded on April 16, 1838. Its first Grand Master and other grand officers were installed by Sam Houston on May 11, 1838. After Texas became a state, it became known as the Grand Lodge of Texas. This transition marked a significant step in the organization's evolution, ensuring continuity in Masonic governance within Texas.

Freemasonry in Texas

Freemasonry in Texas began to take shape earlier, with a meeting of six Masons held under an oak tree near Brazoria in March 1835. This gathering led to the formation of Holland Lodge No. 36 (now Holland Lodge No. 1), with Anson Jones as its first Worshipful Master. Subsequently, Milam Lodge No. 40 in Nacogdoches and McFarland Lodge No. 41 in San Augustine were established in 1837. These lodges played a pivotal role in forming the Grand Lodge of the Republic of Texas, with Anson Jones serving as its first Grand Master.
