One of the earliest commemorations of Memorial Day was held by formerly enslaved people in Charleston, SC, in 1865—right after the defeat of the Confederacy—who gathered to honor the fallen soldiers during the Civil War. Memorial Day is a time to honor those who have pass while serving our country, whether in combat or after returning home. Today, we remember and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
