Check out these fun facts about the Northern Red-bellied Cooter brought to you by our environmental interns, Ava and Soa.⁠ ⁠ These freshwater turtles have a very long lifespan and can live for over 50 years! They are known for their red underside and large size. Their shells can be as long as 35cm. ⁠ ⁠ A fun fact about the Northern Red-bellied Cooter is that the temperature of their nests determines their hatchlings' gender. Females lay their eggs near the water; warmer nests produce females and cooler nests produce males. An easy way to remember this is "hot chicks" and "cool dudes."⁠ ⁠ They are shy and quickly hide in the water when approached, so make sure to watch these turtles from a distance. (fb)
