National Certification Council for Activity Professionals

Follow Message Edit

The National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP) is one of the Certifying Bodies recognized by Federal law, and incorporated in many state regulations. The Mission of NCCAP is to set the highest standards and provide certification for resident-directed, person-centered care for older adults. Since 1986 NCCAP has met the highest CMS standard to deliver life-enriching activity programming for physical, mental and psychosocial well-being and quality of life. Our Modular Education Program for Activity Professionals (MEPAP) is the certification curriculum that provides the essential knowledge and skills to engage, communicate and interact with those living in long-term care settings.

National Certification Council for Activity Professionals

The National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP) is a U.S. nonprofit organization dedicated to certifying professionals in the field of activity therapy, primarily within long-term care facilities. Established in 1986 by the National Association of Activity Professionals (NAAP), NCCAP is recognized for setting standards that ensure high-quality care and life enrichment through activities and engagement.

History and Mandate

NCCAP was created to meet the federal requirements set forth in the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA) of 1987, which mandates that activity departments in long-term care settings be directed by qualified professionals. Over the years, NCCAP has become a pivotal organization in certifying individuals to provide person-centered care using the social model of care.

Certification Levels

NCCAP offers several certification levels, each tailored to different roles and responsibilities within the activity profession. These include:

  • Activity Assistant Certified (AAC): Assists in carrying out activity programs under supervision.
  • Activity Professional Apprentice Certified (APAC): Prepares individuals for more advanced roles.
  • Activity Professional Certified (APC): Enhances professional competencies in activity delivery.
  • Activity Director Certified (ADC): Directs activity programs and staff.
  • Activity Consultant Certified (ACC): Provides expert advice and guidance to activity departments.

Additionally, NCCAP offers Engagement Certifications tailored to specific care settings, such as:

  • Person-Centered Engagement Certified (PCEC)
  • Memory Care: Validation Certified (MCVC)
  • Montessori Dementia Engagement Certified (MDEC)
  • Montessori Home Engagement Certified (MHEC)
  • Adult Day Engagement Certified (ADEC)
  • Assisted Living Engagement Certified (ALEC)
Benefits of Certification

NCCAP certification is recognized nationwide and offers several benefits:

  • Professional Recognition and Career Development: Enhances professional credibility and career opportunities.
  • Quality of Care: Assures that certified professionals meet high standards of care delivery.
  • Educational Resources: Provides access to continuing education and training materials.
  • Employment Opportunities: Many organizations require NCCAP certification for activity professional roles.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Helps facilities meet federal and state regulations for activity programs.
Educational Programs and Standards

NCCAP utilizes the Modular Education Program for Activity Professionals (MEPAP) as a foundational component of its certification process. MEPAP is a comprehensive educational framework that prepares individuals to design and deliver activity services effectively across various care settings. The program emphasizes person-centered care principles, ensuring that graduates are equipped to enhance the quality of life for those they serve.

Impact and Recognition

NCCAP has certified over 150,000 individuals since its inception, contributing significantly to improving the quality of life for the elderly in long-term care environments. It is recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and many state governments for its role in enhancing care standards.
