Many icons of the Great American Songbook, including Meredith Willson, Tony Martin, and Irving Berlin, served in the Armed Forces during their lives. We are proud to preserve images of these Songbook legends in uniform in the Songbook Library & Archives. And while not enlisted, other entertainers like The Andrews Sisters served in their own way, touring nearly nonstop for four years to perform at bond rallies, training camps, and overseas with the USO, earning them the nickname “Sweethearts of the Armed Forces Radio Service.” We share these images as part of National Armed Forces Day in tribute to these individuals and all who have served and continue to serve today.
