In the images here we can see an optometry school lecture hall from c.1960, and a curriculum pamphlet from the early 1900's. The New York Institute of Optometry (NYIO) closed in 1909. Optometric education plays a critical role in the continued success and advancement of our profession and the Optometric Historical Society (OHS) is honored to preserve the history of our educators. #ThrowbackThursday Fenestrated scleral lenses are nothing new. Below is a pair of glass scleral contact lenses dispensed by the practice of Theodore Obrig (1894-1967), a New York optician, and one of the first to fit glass contact lenses. His name can be seen inside the case. However, London-trained optometrist, Norman Bier, was the first to file for a patent for a fenestrated version in the 1940’s. This pair is likely circa 1950’s.
