Wound Care on a Gopher Tortoise 🐢 This Gopher Tortoise was brought to our center after being found on the side of the road, having been struck by a vehicle. Upon examination, our veterinary team discovered a minor fracture on the left side of its shell. Fortunately, a turtle’s shell is made of keratin—the same protein found in human hair and nails—allowing it to slowly regenerate and heal over time. This time of year is considered “turtle crossing season,” particularly near bodies of water, rural areas, and along roadsides. Turtles often cross roads in search of food, shelter, or a safe place to lay their eggs. As you’re out driving, please stay alert and observe posted speed limits—especially in areas known for wildlife crossings. Thanks to timely intervention and dedicated care, this tortoise was successfully released back into the wild once its shell had fully healed. Unfortunately, not all turtles are as lucky. If you come across a turtle that’s been injured by a vehicle, the best course of action is to safely bring it to your nearest wildlife hospital for evaluation and care. #turtlecrossing #roadsafety #StayWild #slowdown #SFWC #NonProfit #Intake (fb)

Do you own property in Broward, Miami-Dade, or Palm Beach County and want to support local wildlife? We have an exciting opportunity for you! The Wild Home Project is an initiative that helps identify safe, suitable locations for wildlife releases—especially during baby season, our busiest time of year. As we care for hundreds of orphaned animals, we look for welcoming spaces where they can safely return to the wild. If you’re interested in making your property part of this important effort, we’d love to hear from you! 📧 Please contact us at info@southfloridawildlifecenter.org to learn more. Help us give wildlife a second chance—right in your own backyard. #NonProfit #WildHome #StayWild #SFWC (fb)
