Rolling Thunder Inc
Overview
Rolling Thunder Inc. is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization dedicated to advocating for prisoners of war (POWs) and missing in action (MIA) service members from all U.S. wars. The organization is headquartered in Neshanic Station, New Jersey.
History
Formed in 1987 and officially incorporated in 1995, Rolling Thunder began as a response by Vietnam War veterans who were concerned about the unaccounted POW/MIAs from the Vietnam War. The organization's first major event was a mass motorcycle rally during Memorial Day weekend in 1988, drawing approximately 2,500 motorcycles. This event, known as the "Rolling Thunder Run to the Wall" or "Ride for Freedom," aimed to raise awareness and demand accountability from the government regarding POW/MIAs.
Purpose and Activities
Rolling Thunder's primary objective is to educate the public about the POW-MIA issue, ensuring that past mistakes are acknowledged and corrected to protect future veterans from being left behind. The organization also supports veterans from all wars and their families, particularly those wounded, missing, or killed in action.
The group has been involved in various legislative efforts to improve veterans' benefits and address the POW-MIA issue. They have co-authored bills and resolutions, including the Missing Service Personnel Act of 1993 and the 2006 Respect for America's Fallen Heroes Act. Rolling Thunder has also lobbied for the establishment of a Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs to investigate unresolved matters related to U.S. service members.
Chapters and Membership
Rolling Thunder has more than 90 chapters across the United States and abroad, with membership open to anyone who supports its mission, regardless of veteran status or motorcycle ownership. Chapters are governed by a unified constitution and bylaws, each with its own leadership and fundraising responsibilities.
Financial Overview
As a 501(c)(4) organization, donations to Rolling Thunder are not tax-deductible. The organization relies on contributions and fundraising events to support its activities. Key employees and officers do not receive compensation for their work.
Additional Initiatives
In addition to its advocacy work, Rolling Thunder has established Rolling Thunder Charities as a 501(c)(3) arm to provide financial assistance to military families and veterans in need.
Evolution of Major Events
The "Rolling Thunder Run to the Wall" was a hallmark annual event held during Memorial Day weekend until its conclusion in 2019. Following this, AMVETS initiated "Rolling to Remember," an event that continues to advocate for POW/MIAs while also focusing on veteran suicide prevention. However, Rolling Thunder continues to organize smaller, local "Ride for Freedom" events throughout the United States.
